The Great Triumvirate and the Bobby Jones Years

Walter Hagen and Gene Sarazen were at the height of their powers during this period, but the man who captured the imagination of golfers throughout the world was Bobby Jones. The young lawyer from Atlanta had a tremendous record on either side of the Atlantic and remained an amateur.

The Bobby Jones Years

Jones won the first of his five US Amateur Championship titles in 1924 and went on to win the Open three times, the US Open twice and the British Amateur once. In the magical season of 1930 he captured all four titles and retired immediately from competitive golf at the age of 30.

There then followed an era of home wins, although after Henry Cotton had regained the honours for Britain with victory at Royal St George's in 1934 there was a greatly reduced American challenge leading up to the second world war.

Sex, Cries and Video Tapes

Strong dramas about the issues that plagued an Egypt in transition were a cry for help to the authorities and dealt with problems like the housing crunch and drug cartels. With the relative increase in freedom of expression experienced under President Mubarak, hard-hitting films about the corruption of businessmen and government officials could come out every once in a while.

In the 1990s the number of films produced remained low, but some did try to make a difference. Actor Hussein Fahmy attempted to use the Cairo International Film Festival, which he headed from 1998 to 2002, to improve the image of Egyptian cinema. Apart from inviting international celebrities like Alain Delon, John Malkovich and Danny Glover to the annual event, he tried to bring in new technology by introducing a trade fair on the fringe of the festival where manufacturers could exhibit their new and improved cinema gadgets.

FALDO BUOYED BY SOLID SHOWING

Faldo finished joint 14th at Augusta and now must wait to see if the United States Golf Association look kindly on him just like the Masters did on his old rival Greg Norman this year.

The 44-year-old is not exempt for Bethpage in New York and said: "I've done some good things this week and one goal I had was to play well enough to get that invite.

"The leaderboard proves the advantage the long hitters have here now after the changes. I'm exhausted, but I'm pleased - I've learnt a lot from playing pressure shots."

Faldo has three Masters and three Open titles to his name. He lost a play-off in the US Open to Curtis Strange in 1988, was third in 1990, fourth in 1992 and seventh only two years ago at Pebble Beach.

Top European yesterday was Jose Maria Olazabal in fourth spot - the fifth top-five finish in America this year for the man who will not, of course, be part of Sam Torrance's Ryder Cup side at The Belfry in September.

City Council seeks fresh start with Nutter

City Council starts work this morning with three newcomers and the holdovers eager for a fresh start with the new administration.

New initiatives expected today include James F. Kenney's bill to allow nonresidents to apply for Civil Service jobs; W. Wilson Goode Jr.'s proposal to phase out the vilified gross-receipts tax; and Darrell L. Clarke's renewed call to explore retail uses for City Hall's public areas.

They all coincide with Mayor Nutter's agenda of a more professional government with a sensible tax structure and an open City Hall. Today, Nutter is expected to ask for more than $20 million in transfers - to the school district, information systems, and the law department, among others - held by Council at the end of the Street administration.

Nutter has yet to request transfer of $34 million for the Department of Human Services.
