| Recent recalls: Girls' Trek bicycles, candle charms
Trek Bicycle Corp., of Waterloo, Wis. has issued a voluntary recall of about 49,000 girls' Trek bicycles because the frames can break during use, causing the rider to lose control and suffer injuries, according to a press release from the U.S. Consumer Product Comission. .

Importer: Trek Bicycle Corp., of Waterloo, Wis. Hazard: The bicycle's frame can break during use, causing the rider to lose control and suffer injuries. Incidents/Injuries: Trek has received 13 reports of frames breaking, including four minor injuries. Description: This recall involves Trek girls' bicycles model MT220 and model years 2005 (light metallic blue), 2006 (metallic silver and metallic purple or pink and pearl white), and 2007 (pink and white pearl or metallic purple). The model name is printed on the frame of the bicycle. Model year 2008 bicycles re not included in this recall. Sold at: Authorized Trek dealers nationwide from April 2004 through June 2007 for about $300. Manufactured in: China and Taiwan Remedy: Consumers should take the recalled bicycle away from children immediately and return it to a Trek dealer for a free replacement MT220 girl's bicycle or a $100 discount on a different size Trek bicycle.

The recalled product is the Trek MT220 girls bicycles model years 2005, 2006 and 2007. The model name is printed on the frame of the bicycle. Model year 2008 bicycles are not included in the recall. The bikes, manufactured in China and Taiwan, were sold for about $300 at authorized Trek dealers nationwide from April 2004 through June 2007, CBS station WFOR-TV in Miami reports. ORU alumni support sought
Uncertainty remained Saturday about what effect Richard Roberts' resignation as president will have on Oral Roberts University, but some observers said it was a step toward improvement.
"I think people are going to be waiting and watching: OK, can it survive without a Roberts at the helm?" said Donald R. Vance, professor of biblical languages and literature.
Vance said he thinks alumni need to support ORU as it undergoes this transition, after being led for 42 years by a Roberts. ORU professors are committed to the school's evangelical Christian mission, but that might not be obvious without a TV minister as president, he said. Christian colleges across the country are led by non-ministers -- "it will just be different for us."
ORU leaders have not addressed what role, if any, Roberts will have at the university.
Kyocera Lingo M1000
Major electronics makers routinely cut portions of their business because of loss or a change in the company's strategy to make profits. Sanyo is no exception to this rule. InformationWeek reports that Sanyo and handset maker Kyocera have finally ended negotiations that began in October for the sale of Sanyo's mobile phone group. Kyocera has agreed to purchase the Sanyo mobile phone operations for $375 million USD. Typically, when a company like Sanyo sheds a division, it is due to poor performance in the marketplace or the lack of profitability. InformationWeek is reporting that Sanyo sold its mobile phone operations in part due to pressure from investors Goldman Sachs Group and Daiwa Securities on the Sanyo founding family. The Sanyo handsets were popular among consumers.
Responding to the Jack Lynch Non-Story
I'm going to try not to flip out. Which I may anyway. Because I'm angry, and I'm repulsed by this whole episode, and it's a large part of what's been keeping me away from this "blog" for too long. A Spokane Police Department internal investigation released in its entirety Wednesday says Deputy Mayor Jack Lynch was not stopped in High Bridge Park last August or apprehended at any time for any illegal activity.
Remaining unanswered are the circumstances surrounding Lynch's still-unexplained medical leave, which was announced Dec. 29 and is expected to continue until March 1. So what? This has always always been a complete and utter distraction from the "story," intended only to damage Mr. Lynch's credibility by implying he's infirm, and likely has a disease of which he is ashamed, or that implies activity unbecoming to an All Powerful City Employee(!).
Give it up, Hamza – you’re too ugly
Of mobs setting fire to buses and blocking the roads with burning tyres. Now, though, just 20 years later, it’s a bit like Surrey. There are well-kept lawns and lots of four-wheel-drive cars. There’s a shopping centre and a forest of cranes building a stadium for the upcoming World Cup. Sure, there’s Winnie Mandela’s mansion, which sits like a bulletproofed blister in the middle of it all, and the "Education is good for you" graffiti doesn’t quite ring true. But I spent a day there last week and at no point did anyone put a tyre round my neck and set fire to it. I even had a jolly nice lunch under a jolly nice bougainvillea bush. So what was it that brought about this transformation? Was it the legion of pop stars who sang about the iniquities of apartheid? Or was it the sanctions? Or could it be that pressure groups back then concentrated on real problems rather than the environment? You do wonder, don’t you? If the firebrands and the beardies would stop worrying about polar bears, could a similar transformation be achieved in Darfur and Zimbabwe and the mayoral office of London? I’m afraid not.

So three of the tagged fish were caught on conventional "J" hooks, and the other three were caught on circle hooks. Only one of the J-hook-caught fish was deep-hooked. "We were able to remove the hook with no problems, and the fish appeared to be in great shape," Graves said. "All the other fish were hooked in the corner of the mouth." Graves, who has used similar tags in his white marlin research, said the remaining four tags likely will be in fish by the start of today's Super Bowl. The tags record information on fish movement and depth in the water. In 30 days, the tags pop off the device implanted into the fish, rising to the surface and transmitting information to a satellite. Sometimes the tags are found and turned in by anglers, resulting in more data.
Why Atheists Are Such Lousy Debaters
I watched the movie "The Great Debaters" last night, and it helped me to understand why atheists are such bad debaters. The movie portrays four students from a little black college in Texas, and shows how, under the tutelage of their pugnacious coach, they went on to defeat Almighty Harvard. Denzel Washington, who plays the coach, says early in the movie that debate is a kind of bloodsport. It's great virtue is that it puts rival ideas up against each other, as argued by people who passionately espouse those ideas, and then it lets the truth emerge through a kind of gladiatorial elimination. For about three years, it appeared as though the leading atheists were formidable debaters. But the reason was that Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, and Christopher Hitchens were selecting weak opponents and then generally giving them a public whipping.
