The switch could come as early as this weekend, if a few construction details are finished in time.

Reedy Creek is spending about $5.5 million on the new station, at left, and a concurrent relocation and upgrade of the fire department's 911 communications center. That amount of money to replace a perfectly functional, 26-year-old fire station might sound a bit extravagant to taxpayers in some cities, but Reedy Creek is dominated by one taxpayer -- Walt Disney World, which likes things to look interesting.

Reedy Creek Fire Chief Ray Colburn said there should be no impact on response times. The new station, he noted, might be a minute farther away from the Contemporary, but it's a minute closer to the Grand Floridian, "so it's a wash." It remains just outside a back gate to the Magic Kingdom, so the time into the theme park it serves should be the same.

Police expand hunt for murder suspect

Both systems alert police officers of outstanding arrest warrants when they check the name of someone being screened after, for example, a traffic stop.

Cape Girardeau police also sent a package of information for the U.S. Marshals Service for inclusion in its fugitive program, department spokesman Sgt. Barry Hovis said.

"We don't know if she is in Southeast Missouri or has gone somewhere else," Hovis said.

Turner is accused of killing Egson out of jealousy. Turner is the estranged wife of Lloyd Gilmore, who was at the North Spanish Street residence when police responded to the shooting at 5:20 a.m. Friday.

Police are also still looking for the front bumper from Turner's blue 2000 Ford Mustang, which they believe may have come loose in a one-car accident somewhere in Cape Girardeau, Hovis said.

Community sports: Cyclist McCune on road to recovery

It's been just over six months since Jenny McCune became a commonality in locals' hearts and prayers.

Deirdre Eitel/Chronicle Ed Scheterlak, Jenny McCune's husband, teaches a free class at the Bozeman Yoga Center Tuesday morning during Community Celebration Week to acknowledge the people who have helped him and McCune after she suffered a life-altering bicycle accident in July. On July 5, the former Gallatin Valley Bike Club president, Team Delphine rider and long-time Bozeman resident took a corner too wide on her bicycle, crashed into a ravine and suffered a spinal-cord injury for which doctors have little understanding and no cure.In an instant, McCune went from an elite athlete to a woman without movement below her shoulders. It was a devastating blow to the community, and proved that the growing Bozeman area still has the small-town atmosphere, McCune's husband, Ed Scheterlak said."In some ways the real story is the way the Bozeman community came together: the biking people, the people from the Zen community, those from the environmental community, people from all the gyms, everybody," Scheterlak said.

SMART ALEX A MEDAL HUNTER

The newest sport at the winter Olympics in Salt Lake City next week should carry a health warning.

Something like: Sliding down a bosleigh run on a tea tray can be hazardous.

But it may be very useful for Britain's traditionally feeble medal count.

The Skeleton offers a serious golden opportunity.

The name derives from the outline of the sledge on which the "sliders" hurtle down the snowy mountains of the world.

Head first. The name might also describe how some of the athletes finish the race.

"Yes, it does look dangerous," admits Britain's gold medal candidate, Alex Coomber, a 27-year-old RAF intelligence officer from Worthing.

"But in reality you can't actually crash out of the track, so it's really a matter of ice burns and bruising when you come off.

Forty-nine miles per gallon for this car

MT. VERNON REGISTER NEWS (MT VERNON, Ill.)

MT VERNON, Ill. — High gas prices? What high gas prices? It takes Russell Davis less than $20 to fill up his car, and he can drive it up to 500 miles before needing to refuel.Davis, of Mt. Vernon, last year purchased a "hybrid" 2005 Toyota Prius, the environmentally friendly car that gets in the neighborhood of 50 miles to the gallon at peak performance."The technology just boggles my mind," said Davis. "There's a computer printout and it said that I am averaging 48 miles a gallon for (my last) 100 miles. "It varies, really, but I average closer to 49."Hybrid cars — vehicles that combine two or more power sources — were popular when they first came out about five years ago, but lagged in sales — at least until the recent upswing in gas prices."They were very popular when they initially came out," said Trevor Moore, manager at Tyler's Motors, a local Toyota dealer that orders the Prius for its customers.
