Bicyclist injured in Cooper City crash

A woman injured while riding a bicycle in Cooper City Monday night is recovering in the hospital, the Broward Sheriff's Office said.

Rui Qi Ge, 60, suffered head injuries after a Ford F-150 pickup truck hit her at the intersection of Stirling Road and Southwest 106th Avenue.

The driver of the pickup, Patricia Heng, 44, was making a left turn when she hit the bicyclist at 8:34 p.m.

Heng remained at the scene of the crash. She was not injured.

Ge was flown to Memorial Regional Hospital, where she remains, BSO spokeswoman Alesia Russell said. She is expected to recover.

No charges will be filed.

The Empire strikes out, and sports will be the downfall

Welcome to the decline and fall of the Roman empire, U.S. edition.

Remember the great Roman empire?

Its decline was not caused not just by greed, lust and indifference to civic virtues. Its decline — and you could look this up, except you won't find it anywhere — was caused by an unhealthy preoccupation with sports. The Romans became so lazy and soft and wealthy, their way of life crumbled as they filled local arenas for chariot races, gladiator fights and the occasional Christian fed to the lions.

Sound familiar?

Their empire and our empire have scary similarities. In ancient Rome, public executions were held at midday; in modern America, we have "The Jerry Springer Show."

You think the emperor Romulus Augustulus was worried about crumbling roads and growing crime? No.

John McCain’s Vice Presidential Not-So-Short List

John Hawkins lists 24 candidates that John McCain might conceivably pick as his running mate with synopses as to the pros and cons of each. I'm rather sure the eventual choice is on that list, as there's nobody that I've heard of who isn't. Indeed, there are several people I haven't heard of on it.

Frankly, the available choices are rather uninspiring. There are good reasons for bypassing each of McCain's big name opponents (Rudy Giuliani, Mitt Romney, Fred Thompson and Mike Huckabee) and there aren't a lot of Republican governors who already come with name recognition.

Al-Qaeda still dangerous: US commander

In Diyala, nine Kurdish troops were killed when suspected al-Qaeda gunmen attacked an Iraqi army checkpoint, police said. The victims were initially identified as policemen but police later said they were Kurdish soldiers.

A spokesman for the Kurdish Peshmerga forces from Iraq's largely autonomous region of Kurdistan said eight Peshmerga troops were killed. Three gunmen were killed, he said.

In central Baghdad's prosperous Karrada neighbourhood, shopkeepers swept up broken glass after a car bomb killed 15 people and wounded 35 on Wednesday, across the Tigris River from the "Green Zone" compound where Gates met Iraqi officials.

With signs of normal life returning, defiant Baghdadis have ignored the destruction to return to Karrada's boutiques.

"That? That was just one explosion," said Um Fadhil as she tried on boots with her two teenaged daughters at a shop just 100 metres from the blast site.

The bike world outside L.A.

I do most of my local errands on my bicycle--no parking hassles, good excercise, and no pollution. Give school kids incentives to ride or walk to school. Have police bike units be role models and teach bicycle safety to kids. Stores can give discounts to bike riders, There is lots we can do! .

ZTE denies making $41-M advance to bag NBN deal

Chief Justice Reynato Puno on Wednesday stressed the importance of the oral arguments set on March 4 in the Supreme Court on the petition of former socioeconomic planning secretary Romulo Neri questioning the Senate's arrest order against him as the SC would then discuss and determine the parameters of executive privilege. abs-cbnNEWS.com (2/27/2008 4:13:59 PM) .

It grazed the SUV and hung on to finish the U-turn.

In their rear-view window, though, Wilkerson's passengers were horrified to see the Denali flipping over and over, according to the sheriff's report.

And that's when, Wilkerson admits, he made a really big mistake. He panicked and took off.

"I freaked out," he says. "That's no excuse; that's so not me. But I had the people in my car yelling, 'Go, go, go!' and I just freaked out and panicked." Sheriff's deputies caught up with him just 10 minutes later.

Because he fled the scene, it's understandable that the sheriff's deputies assumed that Wilkerson had something to hide. Their reports note that he smelled heavily of alcohol, that he'd admitted to smoking pot that morning, that he seemed drunk.

The problem is, all the tests came back well under the legal limit.

U.S. Scrambles to Deal With Bhutto's Death, Repercussions on Efforts ...

FBI and Homeland Security officials sent a bulletin late Thursday to U.S. law enforcement agencies citing Islamist Web sites as saying Al Qaeda had claimed responsibility for the attack and that the group's No. 2 leader, Ayman al-Zawahri, had planned it.

Borough go-slow on cards

LEWISHAM borough could be the first in the capital to get 20mph speed limits across the whole area.

Lewisham Council's sustainable development committee, which scrutinises the council's work on environmental issues, wants to make Lewisham the first London borough to be completely 20mph.

Showers in workplaces for cycling employees, tax-free loans for workers to buy bikes, more cycle racks and more free cycle training for children and adults are also among the proposals raised.
